The Cinematographer as Artist, Expert, Collaborator: Three-time Oscar nominee Wally Pfister, ASC ("Dark Knight," "The Prestige," "The Italian Job") will discuss the art, craft and realities of storytelling from behind the camera and beyond. While cinematographers are called upon to create compelling images for motion pictures, television, commercials and now even more, they are also required to be adept and fluent in the the tools, technologies and pragmatic processes that are a part of the creative process. This is a rare opportunity to hear two of the industry’s most renowned cinematographers discuss their collaborations, talk about why they make (or don’t make) certain choices for artistic reasons, and how the tools of their craft have evolved. Mark Dippe, Director & Rob Neal, Editor, Animation Picture Company - Moderated by Katie FellionAnimating in 3D is difficult enough, but when a stereoscopic release was added for the feature Garfield Pet Force, the team at The Animation Picture Company found themselves faced with the prospect of adapting their current workflow to efficiently and comfortably accommodate both eyes.  Director and veteran VFX Supervisor, Mark Dippe, (Spawn, Jurassic Park, The Flintstones, Rising Sun)and editor, Rob Neal, explain the challenges of creating, monitoring, and delivering the film’s multiple deliverables.

As part of the first wave of Red features to be finished and released, Fox’s S.Darko was a practical exercise for blazing new trails in production and post. In this session, director Chris Fisher (Cold Case, Moonlight, Chuck) and Cinematographer Marvin Rush, ASC (Star Trek: Enterprise, Voyager, Deep Space Nine, The Next Generation) discuss the process of creating another chapter in the Donnie Darko franchise utilizing the newest paradigm-changing tools on the market.

2:45 - RAW Speed: Shooting & Posting with the Phantom Camera
Alex Czetwertynski, Post and VFX Supervisor, Frank the Plumber, and Michael May, Phantom Camera Operator - Moderated by Stephen Beres
Vision Research’s high-speed Phantom camera was originally developed for scientific applications, but with the stunning images it creates,  the format has gained popularity with more creative projects as well.  Seasoned Phantom Camera operator, Michael May, discusses the intricacies of shooting in excess of 1,000 frames per second, while Post and VFX Supervisor, Alex Czetwertynski, explains some of the post and visual effects work utilized in Chris Cornell’s music video, Scream.

At Electric Entertainment, a full-service film, television, and new media company, industry divisions between development, production, and post are being shattered on a daily basis.  Led by writer/producer Dean Devlin (Independence Day, Stargate, The Patriot, Flyboys, Who Killed the Electric Car?) Electric has been responsible for everything from the creative to the final delivery of TNT’s Leverage and Librarian franchises, and is currently developing several feature projects.  Seasoned visual effects producer Mark Franco (Titanic, Batman & Robin, Armageddon, How the Grinch Stole Christmas) helms the in-house digital effects and post production division Electric FX, further evidence of Electric’s progressive DIY approach to any project.

4:15 - Because Nothing Says Death Like 3D: Production and Post For Live Action Stereography
Max Penner, CTO/Stereographer, Paradise FX and Milton Adamou, Head of DI & Senior Colorist, PlasterCITY - Moderated by Katie Fellion
In addition to his role as Stereographer for Dark Country, My Bloody Valentine, and upcoming project, The Hole, Max Penner and his team at Paradise FX are also responsible for creating the RED, and SI-2K, rigs and production workflows responsible for taking these films from RAW images to the silver screen.  In addition to being responsible for designing the stereoscopic plug-ins that make Quantel’s Pablo system the industry leader for 3D digital intermediate and finishing work, Milton Adamou’s expertise has also been tapped for projects including Hannah Montana and Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D.  As two leading experts in the field of live action 3D, Max and Milton explain some of the advantages and challenges of creating comfortable and compelling 3D content.

5:15 - Don’t Call It a Shootout: The PGA/ASC Camera Assessment Series
Nancy Schreiber, ASC, Director of Photography and O. D. Welch, President - Entertainment Management Group, EVOLVE Consulting L.A. - Moderated by Paul Geffre
In January 2009, the PGA and ASC jointly orchestrated what is arguably the largest camera assessment in history.  Creating a series of side-by-side assessments with the aim of evaluating the technical, practical, and image-capture performance characteristics for the latest in digital motion picture cameras is no small feat.  Teams of producers, cinematographers, and manufacturers collaborated to create the series of tests on Universal Studios’ Desperate Housewives set. The two-day shoot put the Sony F23, Sony F35, Thomson Viper, RED One, Arri D-21, Panavision Genesis, Panasonic 3700, and 35mm Arri 435 through their paces.  Cinematographer Nancy Schreiber, ASC and O.D. Welch, PGA discuss the goals and challenges in creating and executing this history-making series.

6:15 - Making a Film Without Film: Exploring Options For Digital Cinema 
John Leonetti, ASC, Director of Photography  and Milton Adamou, Head of DI & Senior Colorist, PlasterCITY - Moderated by Steve Beres
While much of his background includes 35mm projects (The Woods, Dead Silence, Death Sentence, The Scorpion King, Joe Dirt, Mortak Kombat, The Mask), cinematographer John Leonetti’s two most recent projects were digitally acquired,including the Lindsey Lohan thriller, I Know Who Killed Me, shot with the Panavision Genesis. Likewise, Milton Adamou’s experience as a colorist for both film and digitally acquired projects gives him considerable insight into the power and range of digital cinema in DI.  Using their recent collaboration on action thriller, Hybrid, shot on location with six RED cameras, as a foundation, the pair discusses their experiences with digital cinema cameras.
